Gaudí Tour – Modernist Barcelona (4h)
The modernist Barcelona starts in Passeig de Gràcia, where the wealthy Catalan families settled in the late nineteenth century. Today, it is the most elegant avenue in the city: the “5th avenue” of Barcelona. We will understand why this new social class emerged, as it was the beginning of the economic development of Catalonia. We will see the Casa Lleó i Morera, the Casa Amatller, both the Casa Batlló and Casa Milà, and we will go in to one of them – I recommend the Casa Milà – to see how the bourgeoisie lived. Our next stop will be the Sagrada Família, a masterpiece of Antonio Gaudí that is still unfinished and the most visited place in the whole city. We will end the tour going to the Park Güell, work of Gaudí for his friend and patron, Eusebi Güell.
For transportation, the most usual and inexpensive is public transportation and taxi; another option is to rent a vehicle with a driver (limousine or van), but we will really not benefit much from it.
Barcelona is where you will find more modernist pieces in the world. If you have more time you can complement this tour with the following options:
Palau Güell (12€): Designed by Gaudí for the Güell family to live in. Located next to the Rambla, Gaudí vas able to find an infinity of solutions for this small space. It has been available for visits since 2011
Palau de la Música (18€): The Catalan society unified forces to build a place where the Orfeó Català Choir could rehearse and play. The building is probably the most famous work of the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The visits are held in groups and they require making a reservation.
The Santa Creu i Pau Hospital (10€): Modernist work of Lluís Domènech i Montaner, very advanced for its time of what a perfect hospital should be. (A reservation is required).
The Museum of Catalan Modernism (10€): Modernism was an art that arrived to all levels, not only architecture and paintings. Here, we can see furniture made by the architects for some of the modernist families in the city.
